Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever.

Few people realize that this song was written in Zulu in the 1920s, and may have been traditional before then. The original name was Mbubu (lion). This song has a special religious significance in South Africa. “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8

Puritan Prayer for the Morning

O  God, the author of all good, I come to You for the grace another day will require for its duties and events. I step out into a wicked world; I carry about with me an evil heart. I know that without You I can do nothing, that everything with which I shall be concerned, however harmless in itself, may prove an occasion of sin or folly, unless I am kept by Your power.

Hold me up O God and I shall be safe. Preserve my understanding from subtlety of error, my affections from love of idols, my character from stain of vice, my profession from every form of evil.

May I engage in nothing in which I cannot implore Your blessing, and in which I cannot invite Your inspection. Prosper me in all lawful undertakings, or prepare me for disappointments. Give me neither poverty nor riches. Feed me with food suitable for me, lest I be full and deny You and say, “Who is the Lord?” Or be poor, and steal, and take Your name in vain.

May every creature be made good to me by prayer and Your will. Teach me how to use the world and not abuse it, to improve my talents, to redeem my time, to walk in wisdom toward those without, and in kindness to those within, to do good to all men, and especially to my fellow Christians. And to You, O God, be the glory.

To See Christ

Oh holy Christ, teach me to recognize your face in the people you put into my life today.

[I step out into a wicked world.]

Walk with me, dear Lord, so that I may not be alone as I face this day, but always in your presence. Your joy is a lighthouse in a world often dark with sin, and I pray that I may reflect the light of your truth, to inspire others as I have been inspired. In the name of Christ, bless me this day, and all whom I may meet.

Think of the day ahead in terms of God with you, and visualize health, strength, guidance, purity, calm confidence, and victory as the gifts of His presence.

Matthew 1:1-2, 16-17 (ESV)

1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,

         *         *         *

16 . . . and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ.

17 So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations.

Mason - have often wondered that with 14 generations 15-20 years per each generation that's only about 300 years, not enough to actually account for the true passage of time is it? David to Jesus is how long and are we missing so generations. Also the art piece depicting the history and the short explanations are truly terrific. Can't imagine how you did that or the time it took. Thank you. Neil

David to Jesus is 28 generations, not 14, I think. Am I wrong? David to Jesus is about 1000 years, the best I know. That involves a lot of guesswork but seems to be a consensus. That's 35 years per generation, which isn't unreasonable. These are "legal" generations. My understanding (which is very weak)) is that these are calculated at the time of inheritance or "blessing", and so might be longer, as the heir might not be the firstborn son. The other scrap of ... Read More

Your "Freedom and Slavery" Daily Inspiration is excellent! I loved your point that non-conformists are really conforming (slaves) to their non-conformity! And, not surprisingly, the responses.of non-believers to Christianity are much the same.

Thank you for Daily Devotion and your love of the Lord that inspires me daily!

I don't know Jeffery Krantz, but this genealogy is great! I have heard from some that the apparently conflicting genealogies were one for Joseph, and the other for Mary.
