Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever.

Amen.

Troubled by Sin

Holy god, Lord most gracious!
Rebuke me not in your anger, nor chasten me in your wrath!
Holy you have called me to come to you.
I feel unworthy, for I have failed you again and again.
I feel like running away, yet you keep calling me.
Have mercy on me, and all of us, O God.
Have mercy!

Holy God, Father most gracious!
Rebuke me not in your anger, nor chasten me in your wrath!
Heal me from my sin, for I am troubled.
Deliver me for the sake of your steadfast love.
My sins trouble me, O God.
I am troubled by how they have hurt others.
I am troubled by how they have hurt myself.
Your ways are right! O righteous God!
And whenever I have failed to follow them
I have found out how right they are.
Have mercy on me, O God.

Holy God, God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
have mercy on me for the sake of your Son,
who died to free us from our sins.
To you be honor and glory!

Amen.

For Those in Pain

Holy Lord God, bless and uphold all who are sick and suffering this day. Console them with your Holy Spirit, and if it is your will, bring their suffering to a quick conclusion. In Christ's name I pray,

Amen.

Benediction

May the God of hope fill me and all of us with the joy and peace that comes from believing, so that we may abound in hope, by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Genesis 39:1-6 (ESV)

Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife [1]

Now Joseph had been brought down to Egypt, and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, had bought him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him down there. The Lord was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, and he was in the house of his Egyptian master. His master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord caused all that he did to succeed in his hands.

So Joseph found favor in his sight and attended him, and he made him overseer of his house and put him in charge of all that he had. From the time that he made him overseer in his house and over all that he had, the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; the blessing of the Lord was on all that he had, in house and field.

So he left all that he had in Joseph’s charge, and because of him he had no concern about anything but the food he ate.

Notes on the Scripture

T

he captain of the guard was the person in head of the Pharoah’s personal safety. Comparing him to the Chief of the Secret Service in the US would not be accurate, for monarchs were in much more personal danger and their guard more sensitive to bribery. So, for instance, the captain of the guard at the Vatican in Renaissance times was an enormously elevated post; often such a person might sit on the ruling council.

Which is to say, Potiphar was one of the most important and powerful men in Egypt, which was in turn the most powerful and advanced country in the western world. Joseph did well, becoming Potiphar’s steward. He was no doubt a remarkable man, but he had a sizable advantage: God was with him.

Thank you for this daily study. I have been reading it off & on for the the last two years; it has greatly blessed my life & for the most part it seems scriptually accurate. I appreciate you listening to your recent reader's comment (Julie & later Barbra) in requesting to remove the prayer about homosexuality (which is now no longer on the site). I especially agree w Barbra when she said, "Lets leave the judgement to the One who has all the facts and sees the heart". I ... Read More

To pray for someone's sin is not to judge them. To pretend that homosexuality is not a sin, because we do not want to offend the current sensibilities of a secular society, violates the Biblical commandment: Do not be conformed to the present age. Will we soon stop praying for those who commit adultery? Fornication?

The prayer was not taken down.

What specific Notes are you implying are not Scripturally accurate. I will gladly review them and change them if this is true.

Thank You Mr. Barge for your biblical and godly stand on homosexuality. You are right in your conviction. May the Holy Spirit continue to enlighten us in our thinking. God bless you always. Your daily prayer is a daily source of inspiration.

Forgive me Mason for bringing up the prayer for homosexuals again. When you responded that it is still up there and showed the website, it brings up the current day devotion. Can you tell me the exact date it was published? I agree with you and I know people in my life that I would like to pray for. Thank you and God Bless.

Last sentence: "So he left all that he had in Joseph’s charge, and because of him he had no concern about anything but the food he ate."
Why was Potiphar concerned about the food he are?
Not because of Joseph but because of others in the palace? So Potiphar obsessed over almost every bite of food? Do you imagine he had tasters? If so he probably saw some get sick eating what was prepared for him. Royalty does pay a price.

I noticed that too, Neil. It could just be an idiom, i.e. "he doesn't have a care in the world," but you would have to think he would have food tasters -- especially if he had brothers or sisters!

I still think we can pray that sinners will find their way to freedom from their sins. Do we not pray that those addicted to drugs, alcohol or other harmful vices will give them up and make straight their path? Also, you can love the sinner and not the sin.

Thank you for this site and the daily prayers, bible study and insight. I have the link on my phone and try to visit every day. God bless us, everyone.
