Daily Devotion for June 12, 2018

When you pray, go into your room and pray to your Father in secret, Matthew 6:6

Prayers

Scripture

526 people in our community are currently praying with you.

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever.

Amen.

Prayer to Have Inner Peace in the Coming Day

Heavenly God, may I have peace within, this day;
May I trust God that I am exactly where I am meant to be.
May I not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith.
May I use those gifts that I have received, and pass on the love that has been given to me.
May I be confident knowing I am a child of God.
Let this presence settle into my bones, and allow my soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. This I pray in Christ’s name,

Amen.

(~ St. Therese of Lisieux)

For Holiness

O  Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, do not permit vanity, self-love, sensuality, carelessness, nor anger to rule over me and steal me from Thy love, O my Lord and Creator, all my hope! Do not leave me without a portion of the blessed eternity. Grant also that I may follow Thy Holy example, that I may submit to the authorities placed over me. Grant me the clean soul, the simplicity of heart that makes us worthy of Thy love.

Amen.

Dedication

Finally, let me go forth in thanks for the victory I have been given through our Lord Jesus Christ. May I be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, and always remembering that in the Lord our labor is not in vain.

Amen.

(Additional prayers may be found at Prayers for All Occasions.)
God be with you 'til we meet again.

2 Samuel 13:7-21 (NLT)

So David agreed and sent Tamar to Amnon’s house to prepare some food for him.

W

hen Tamar arrived at Amnon’s house, she went to the place where he was lying down so he could watch her mix some dough. Then she baked his favorite dish for him. But when she set the serving tray before him, he refused to eat. “Everyone get out of here,” Amnon told his servants. So they all left.

Then he said to Tamar, “Now bring the food into my bedroom and feed it to me here.” So Tamar took his favorite dish to him. But as she was feeding him, he grabbed her and demanded, “Come to bed with me, my darling sister.”

“No, my brother!” she cried. “Don’t be foolish! Don’t do this to me! Such wicked things aren’t done in Israel. Where could I go in my shame? And you would be called one of the greatest fools in Israel. Please, just speak to the king about it, and he will let you marry me.”

But Amnon wouldn’t listen to her, and since he was stronger than she was, he raped her. Then suddenly Amnon’s love turned to hate, and he hated her even more than he had loved her. “Get out of here!” he snarled at her.

“No, no!” Tamar cried. “Sending me away now is worse than what you’ve already done to me.”

But Amnon wouldn’t listen to her. He shouted for his servant and demanded, “Throw this woman out, and lock the door behind her!”

So the servant put her out and locked the door behind her. She was wearing a long, beautiful robe, as was the custom in those days for the king’s virgin daughters. But now Tamar tore her robe and put ashes on her head. And then, with her face in her hands, she went away crying.

Her brother Absalom saw her and asked, “Is it true that Amnon has been with you? Well, my sister, keep quiet for now, since he’s your brother. Don’t you worry about it.” So Tamar lived as a desolate woman in her brother Absalom’s house.

When King David heard what had happened, he was very angry.

Notes on the Scripture

Amnon is a bad egg. When he succeeds in his plot to be alone with his half-sister Tamar, she even offers to marry him in order to prevent the disgraceful events that followed, but Amnon will have none of it. He ravishes her and, when the deed is done, he despises her.

Times being as they were, she is disgraced. David is furious but does not seem inclined to severe punishment of his sons. Absalom is another matter. He hates his own brother. Having Tamar living with him, and seeing her in her disgrace every day, just adds fuel to his hatred.

I have decided that when catastrophic events happen or even something significant happening like Trump meeting with Kim Jung Un, I am not taking my eyes off Him who created me and whose word lives in me. I will feel sad or happy for a moment but I am preparing myself for days when terrible surprises unfold to remember that God still reigns! He is not shaken and I will hold his hand by writing a bible verse on a card, putting it in my pocket and clutching it during moments of panic. My husband ... Read More

I cannot go quietly Mason when children are being killed in schools and our legislators refuse to do anything about the removing of assault weapons and other types of weapons causing mass killings. My daughter is a schoolteacher and I pray to God to keep her safe every day. If I had my way, all guns except hunting rifles would be banned because even revolvers are only meant to kill people not to hunt with. I urge anyone reading this will be sure is a vote for someone who will help end the ... Read More

"My" website and my opinion are worth nothing. It was God who wrote the Gospel of Matthew. I try to present what the Bible says with as little "Mason" as possible. You are arguing that you don't like what Christ says, which is pretty much how every human being feels, who reads the Word. I sympathize -- a lot of it is hard to swallow. I have my own troubles accepting God's Word. If you cannot accept the Bible's teaching on this or any other point, I hope ... Read More

Rev. Leroy. Speaking from outside the US, slavery is still alive and well in the America, but you just don't realise it. The country is enslaved by the 2nd. amendment which was to allow citizens to bear arms against federal interference - not each other. As for mental illness being the cause of each successive mass shooting, it does play a part, but only a part. We have mental illness here too, plenty of it, but we don't have guns. We have also gone 30+ years without a mass shooting. ... Read More

I think most of the readers of this page will appreciate how quickly the discussion has disintegrated into anger, opinion, and self-righteousness divisiveness. Any more preaching of politics or discussion of gun control will be deleted. If anyone feels angry or deeply desirous of responding, I'd encourage you to examine the beam in your own eye, before you judge the mote in the eye of your brother or sister. I will try to do the same. What does the Bible teach us about our relationship to ... Read More

Dear friends on DP, My husband and I are in a spot or more like a deep hole; our circumstances are crumbling around us.
