Daily Devotion for July 20, 2018
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever.
Maria dixit: Ecce ancilla Domini.
Et Verbum caro factum est
Music by Franz Biebl
Prayer of Praise and Thanks
Oh God, you know every blade of grass that grows, every sparrow that dies, every act and thought of the seven billion people here on earth. The hundred billion stars are yours and you made them, and you watch them, and the vastness of space and the countless galaxies, you know. You know my coming in and my going out, my thoughts and dreams and schemes, my countless little sins and lies, my kindnesses and my cruelties, my prayers and my curses.
Your knowledge is utterly beyond my comprehension, Lord. And yet, despite all of this, you have promised to know me, to be with me, to listen to me and help me and, if I only ask for it in the name of your Son, to forgive me when I offend you.
I praise you above all else, Mighty God; for the wonderment of your existence and the unfathomable size and complexity of your creation. And above all, my love and obedience are yours; I give them to you now and forever, in gratitude for your greatest gift, the sacrifice of your blessed Son, Jesus Christ.
Prayer of Appreciation
O Lord, how lovely it is to be Thy guest. Breeze full of scents; mountains reaching to the skies; waters like boundless mirrors, reflecting the sun’s golden rays and the scudding clouds. All nature murmurs mysteriously, breathing the depth of tenderness. Birds and beasts of the forest bear the imprint of Thy love.
Blessed art thou, mother earth, in thy fleeting loveliness, which wakens our yearning for happiness that will last for ever, in the land where, amid beauty that grows not old, the cry rings out: Alleluia!
[Do I trust God in trouble, or do I blame Him for the consequences of human disobedience?]
Now unto him that is able to keep me from falling, and to present me faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Savior, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever.

God be with you 'til we meet again.
Proverbs 3:24-26 (NKJV)
When you lie down, you will not be afraid;
Yes, you will lie down and your sleep will be sweet.
Do not be afraid of sudden terror,
Nor of trouble from the wicked when it comes;
For the Lord will be your confidence,
And will keep your foot from being caught.
John 8:21-24 (ESV)
You Will Die in Your Sins
o he said to them again, “I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.” So the Jews said, “Will he kill himself, since he says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?”
He said to them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.”
Notes on the Scripture
Today, Jesus continues to address the Pharisees who have demanded proof for his claim to be the Son of God. After basically rejecting their demand for proof, telling him that the only witnesses he would produce were himself and the Father, he proceeds to attack their religious authority.
They obviously still don’t understand him. He says, “I am going where you cannot come,” and the only way they can interpret it is to think he means to kill himself. This is ironic, because they will kill him. He will simply submit to murder.
He then tells them exactly what he means: He is from God and of God, while they are not. He is “from another world,” the world of the spirit—heaven. Unless they believe in him, they are the ones who will die. But he will go to heaven after his death, where they will be unable to find him, because living humans cannot go there. If they want to live, they must believe in him. If they want to follow him then, they must “follow” him now.
