Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever.

Amen.

Prayer for the Morning

The night has passed, the sun shines its light upon us, and the day lies open before me. As I rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may the light of your presence fill me with love for you and my fellow man, holy God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Abide with me, I pray, now and forever.

Amen.

To Witness to Christ

Heavenly Father, Christ left with us his instructions to spread the gospel into every nook and cranny of the world, to let others know about him and find him, to save their souls and bring them into true peace and your ultimate purpose for us. But I am so stupid and ignorant, I do not know what to say. I am so filled with a desire not to offend others that I am afraid to speak up. It is so much easier for me just to sit back and leave everything up to you, or up to professional preachers. I retreat into thinking that this is somebody else’s job.

Help me dear Lord to do your work. I promise to try, but I cannot do this without your help. Fill me with the fire of your Holy Spirit and give me the words and the strength, if only to witness how much you have meant to me in my own life. Give me strength to plunge straight through feelings of awkwardness or potential hostility, and to offer to you just the simplest witness before others. For I know that if I help only one person to find you, it is worth ten thousand rejections. Bless me to remember, that the harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.

In Christ’s name, I pray,

Amen.

Benediction

Now unto him that is able to keep me from falling, and to present me faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Savior, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever.

Amen.

Think of the day ahead in terms of God with you, and visualize health, strength, guidance, purity, calm confidence, and victory as the gifts of His presence.

Today’s “Remember the Bible” Question

Where does Christ tells us that people who are not “against” us are “for” us?

Answer: Mark 9:40

Psalm 31:9-13, 22-24 (NKJV)

Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am in trouble;
My eye wastes away with grief,
Yes, my soul and my body!

For my life is spent with grief,
And my years with sighing;
My strength fails because of my iniquity,
And my bones waste away.

I am a despised thing among all my enemies,
But especially among my neighbors,
And am repulsive to my acquaintances;
Those who see me outside flee from me.
I am forgotten like a dead man, out of mind;
I am like a perishing vessel.

For I hear the slander of many;
Fear is on every side;
While they take counsel together against me,
They scheme to take away my life.

Nevertheless You heard the voice of my supplications
When I cried out to You.

Oh, love the Lord, all you His saints!
For the Lord preserves the faithful,
And fully repays the proud person.
Be of good courage,
And He shall strengthen your heart,
All you who hope in the Lord.

Acts 20:1-6 (NKJV)

Paul’s Third Journey
Paul Returns to Macedonia (Greece)
A

fter the uproar had ceased, Paul called the disciples to himself, embraced them, and departed to go to Macedonia.

Now when he had gone over that region and encouraged them with many words, he came to Greece and stayed three months. And when the Jews plotted against him as he was about to sail to Syria, he decided to return through Macedonia.

And Sopater of Berea accompanied him to Asia — also Aristarchus and Secundus of the Thessalonians, and Gaius of Derbe, and Timothy, and Tychicus and Trophimus of Asia. These men, going ahead, waited for us at Troas. But we sailed away from Philippi after the Days of Unleavened Bread, and in five days joined them at Troas, where we stayed seven days.

Notes on the Scripture

There’s not much to today’s Scripture, simply a list of places visited and people who traveled with Paul. Paul sails to Macedonia (northern Greece) and then travels to southern Greece, or “Achaea”. When he is about to leave Greece to return to Antioch by ship, some sort of plot against him by the Jews changes his plans, and he returns the way he came, via land to Macedonia. He catches a ship at Philippi.

Paul is at the geographical midpoint of his third journey; he has traveled from Antioch to (probably) Corinth and then turned around and headed home. In terms of time, however, it is late in his journey. He spent three years in Ephesus alone — from here he is headed pretty much straight home.
