Daily Devotion for September 12, 2019
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever.
This song by Parry Griffin is modern, although she gives it a retro 50s rock sound.
Well, I believe in my soul
And I'm going on home;
Hallelujah, oh Lord, I'm moving, move up.
When this life is over
I'm going to stick my sword in the sand;
I'm going to go on home to Jesus
Over in glory land;
I'm moving to the sky
In a heaven, on a high.
Well, all my life I want to know
Is why my Jesus loved me so.
Yes, oh Lord, I'm moving, move up;
I'm going to move up to the sky
To my home on a high.
I'm going to see my loving mother;
I'm going to see my father too.
I'm going to sing with the angels,
Tell them how I made it through.
Well, I'm going to move on up in glory,
Move on up in glory,
Move on up on glory,
After a while.
One of these mornings -
And it won't be very long -
They're going to look for me down here,
And I'll believe I'll be going on home.
I'm going to walk with my father,
Settle with the son,
Tell him all about this world,
That I've come from.
I'm going to see my loving mother,
I'm going to see my father too,
I'm going to walk around in glory,
And spread the news.
Well, all my life I want to know
Is why my Jesus loved me so.
Yes, oh Lord, I'm moving, oh Lord,
Move up, oh Lord.
Music and Lyrics: Traditional
Prayer to be Ready
Keep me, O Lord, while I tarry on this earth, seeking after you each day, in a loving and faithful walk with you; that when you come, I may be found not hiding my talent, nor serving my flesh, nor with my lamp empty or hidden; But waiting ready for my Lord, longing for you, my glorious God forever and ever.
Prayer for Renewal
O God, who for our redemption gave your only-begotten Son to the death of the cross, and by his glorious resurrection delivered us from the power of our enemy: Grant me and my fellow saints so to die daily to sin, that we may evermore live with him in the joy of his resurrection. Stir up in your Church that Spirit of adoption which is given to us in Baptism, that all Christendom, being renewed both in body and mind, may worship you in sincerity and truth; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Teach me Your Way
Teach me your way, O Lord, and I will walk in your truth; Unite my heart to fear your name. I will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart, and I will glorify your name forever more. Great is your mercy toward me, and You have delivered my soul from the depths of hell. All praise be to You, Oh God my Redeemer, today and forever.
The blessing of the Lord rest and remain upon all his people, in every land, of every tongue; the Lord meet in mercy all that seek him; the Lord comfort all who suffer and mourn; the Lord hasten his coming, and give us, his people, the blessing of peace.
Think of the day ahead in terms of God with you, and visualize health, strength, guidance, purity, calm confidence, and victory as the gifts of His presence.
Today’s “Remember the Bible” Question
Where does the Bible tell us to work with our hands?
Proverbs 13:24 (The Message)
A refusal to correct is a refusal to love . . . .
Psalm 113 (KJ21)
raise ye the Lord!
Praise, O ye servants of the Lord;
praise the name of the Lord!
Blessed be the name of the Lord
from this time forth and for evermore.
From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same,
the Lord’s name is to be praised.
The Lord is high above all nations,
and His glory above the heavens.
Who is like unto the Lord our God
who dwelleth on high, who humbleth Himself to behold the things
that are in heaven and on the earth?
He raiseth up the poor out of the dust
and lifteth the needy out of the dunghill,
that He may set him with princes,
even with the princes of His people. He maketh the barren woman to keep house,
and to be a joyful mother of children.
Praise ye the Lord!
Notes on the Scripture
Whom do we praise? We praise someone who has done something really well, who has done a good job, an exeptional job. But who has done the most exceptional job of anyone we know of? God, Jehovah, Yahweh. He made everything. We praise our husband or wife if they work in the yard or clean the garage, so how can we possibly have words to express how we feel about God, who made the grass and the sky and dogs and cats and people? Who made us.
We need to praise Him, for there is nothing to compare to His creation, nothing even in the same league. And when should we praise Him? How much is enough? There is not enough. We should praise Him from the time we wake up until we go to sleep, for our life is His work. From the rising of the sun to its setting, because light is His creation also. If we eat food, we should praise Him for the existence of our food, because it is His creation.
Presidents and senators and armies are full of pride in their importance and strength, but they are so pitiful compared to the glory of the God who created them that they are not worth noticing; and yet, God notices them, and not just them, but every one of us.
This is the greatest miracle of all. There are over seven billion people on earth, and a hundred billion planets in our galaxy, and a hundred billion galaxies (we think) in our universe, and yet . . . God will take the time and trouble to notice every one of us. He knows who we are. He will listen to us for as long as we want to pray to Him. He will send His Spirit to live with us. Amazing!
Do we pity the begger in the street? We should not, because God is with him. We may help him if we can, for to love is God’s will for us, but we should not pity him, for God will raise him out of his poverty to the level of a king. He is important in the eye of God and his inheritance will be perfect happiness. Who else could possibly do this? Who should care enough? And if we do not praise such wonderful love, the total love of the highest Being in existence for the lowliest and most miserable, what could possibly be worthy of praise?
We should praise God, with our mouth, with our deeds, and with our thoughts every moment of the day, for that is how wonderful He is.
