Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever.

Amen.

For God’s Blessing

O  marvelous God, who is my light, my life, and my salvation; Grant to me, I pray, such fullness of faith and such a consciousness of your love and goodness, that your blessed Spirit, dwelling within me, may give me health of body, peace of mind, faithfulness of heart, and holiness of life and being; through the mercies and merits of the same, my Savior, Jesus Christ.

Amen.

For Guidance

Mighty Lord, there are marvelous things that I do not know, nor can I comprehend: things that happen in my life, and things that happen in my friends’ lives, and things that happen in the world. I pray to be thankful when I hear of all of them, to appreciate everything that comes across my path. So often life hurts, and I get angry or upset; I do not understand, yet you ask me to be thankful for everything, and have faith.

So I thank you now, Lord, for all those occasions when I have forgotten or have been so caught up in emotions that I could not. Help me to be thankful, I pray, when the rains come on the just and the unjust, that you care so much about me, that the rains come to chasten, to build character and godliness in me. And help me to live as a mirror of your Son, so that I might reach others.

Amen.

Meditation

“Don't let your real situation discourage you. Everyone who got where they are, started where they were.”

~ John C. Maxwell

Benediction

May the Almighty and merciful Lord graciously hear me, pardon and deliver me from all my sins, confirm and strengthen me in all goodness, and bring me to everlasting life; through my Savior, Jesus Christ.

Amen.

Think of the day ahead in terms of God with you, and visualize health, strength, guidance, purity, calm confidence, and victory as the gifts of His presence.

1 John 2:15-16 (ESV)

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.

Judith 16:14-25 (NABRE)

L

et your every creature serve you;
for you spoke, and they were made.
You sent forth your spirit, and it created them;
no one can resist your voice.
For the mountains to their bases
are tossed with the waters;
the rocks, like wax, melt before your glance.”

“But to those who fear you,
you will show mercy.
Though the sweet fragrance of every sacrifice is a trifle,
and the fat of all burnt offerings but little in your sight,
one who fears the Lord is forever great.”

“Woe to the nations that rise against my people!
the Lord Almighty will requite them;
in the day of judgment he will punish them:
He will send fire and worms into their flesh,
and they will weep and suffer forever.”

When they arrived at Jerusalem, they worshiped God. As soon as the people were purified, they offered their burnt offerings, voluntary offerings, and donations. Judith dedicated to God all the things of Holofernes that the people had given her, putting under the ban the canopy that she herself had taken from his bedchamber. For three months the people continued their celebration in Jerusalem before the sanctuary, and Judith remained with them.

When those days were over, all of them returned to their inheritance. Judith went back to Bethulia and remained on her estate. For the rest of her life she was renowned throughout the land. Many wished to marry her, but she gave herself to no man all the days of her life from the time her husband, Manasseh, died and was gathered to his people.

Her fame continued to increase, and she lived in the house of her husband, reaching the advanced age of one hundred and five. She set her maid free. And when she died in Bethulia, they buried her in the cave of her husband, Manasseh; and the house of Israel mourned her for seven days. Before she died, she distributed her property to the relatives of her husband, Manasseh, and to her own relatives.

During the lifetime of Judith and for a long time after her death, no one ever again spread terror among the Israelites.

Notes on the Scripture

And so concludes the remarkable story of Judith. We include today the last part of her prayer, which was too long to print in one sitting. One would be tempted to compare her to a judge, especially Deborah, from the period a thousand years earlier in Hebrew history; but the judges were leaders and rulers, whereas Judith came from obscurity and, when her job was done, retired from public life.

Capital “B”, Hunterian Psalter, English ca. 1170. This is the beginning of Psalm 1, Beatus vir — “Blessed is the man who walks”.

Tax Status

I added a link to Daily Prayer’s tax-exempt determination letter from the IRS, in the “About Us” section, to give newer readers confidence that donations are legitimate and tax-deductible. There are a lot of scam artists out there!

Also, we have decided to grow the Facebook ministry. It has been steady at around 650,000 followers for a few years. It reaches a lot of people in third-world countries whose English is not sufficient for them to follow the Daily Devotion, and there seem to be a lot of people eager to join, if they know about it. It costs us about 1.67 cents per new member in advertising budget.

Memory Verse

Ephesians 2:8: For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
