Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever.

Amen.

Prayer for the Morning

Heavenly Father, I do not fear this day, for you are with me wherever I might go, your light to shine ahead, your footsteps to lead the way. I do not fear this day, for your word will be my guide. Your strength will sustain me and your love revive me, this day and all days. I do not fear this day, for you are with me. In the name of Christ, I call upon you.

Amen.

To Be Powerless

Lord Christ, may all of my expectations be frustrated. May all of my plans be thwarted. May all of my desires be withered into nothingness, that I may experience the powerlessness and poverty of a child, and sing and dance and pray utterly in the love of God the Father, the Son, and the Spirit.

Amen.

For Unity

Christian praise

Heavenly Lord, let me always remember that the Holy Spirit who guides and protects me is the same Spirit who guides and protects all Christians. We are one in your Spirit, and the differences that divide us are the work of Satan. He is powerful in the world, Lord; and only you are strong enough to protect us against him.

Let me always seek unity. Let me call on your Spirit for power when I feel separated from my brother or sister, the power of reconciliation, that we might find the unity and harmony in which you have commanded us to live. Let me never think that the Spirit conforms to my individual personality; but let me seek to conform myself to the one true Spirit of God. In Christ’s name, I pray.

Amen.

Benediction

If you are with me, O God, who can be against me? For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate me from the love of God in Christ Jesus my Lord.

Amen.

Think of the day ahead in terms of God with you, and visualize health, strength, guidance, purity, calm confidence, and victory as the gifts of His presence.

Today’s “Remember the Bible” Question

What does 2 Timothy 3:16 tell us?

Answer: “All Scripture is inspired by God . . . .”

How Good is An Opinion?

A demonic spirit’s favorite activity is making a person feel religious without an understanding of the Word of God.

Exodus 3:16-22 (ESV)

Moses and The Burning Bush [4] - The Lord Charges Moses
G illuminated, Belluno Gradual, St. Francis

o and gather the elders of Israel together and say to them, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, has appeared to me, saying, “I have observed you and what has been done to you in Egypt, and I promise that I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt to the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, a land flowing with milk and honey.’

And they will listen to your voice, and you and the elders of Israel shall go to the king of Egypt and say to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us; and now, please let us go a three days’ journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God.’

But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go unless compelled by a mighty hand. So I will stretch out my hand and strike Egypt with all the wonders that I will do in it; after that he will let you go.

And I will give this people favor in the sight of the Egyptians; and when you go, you shall not go empty, but each woman shall ask of her neighbor, and any woman who lives in her house, for silver and gold jewelry, and for clothing. You shall put them on your sons and on your daughters. So you shall plunder the Egyptians.”

Notes on the Scripture

God gives Moses a synopsis in advance; unlike His call to many of His prophets, He gives Moses the comfort of knowing a precise outcome. Moses might not suspect the degree of difficulty, or long time that the process will take, but God in His wisdom does give him a specific set of promises.

God’s tone has become a bit gentler; perhaps He is pleased with Moses’ humility, who in the previous verses says “who am I?” to carry out such a great mission. Moses has allowed the Lord to define their relationship: he asks who God is, and then, who he himself is. Although he has not always behaved correctly, Moses is utterly open to instruction and obedience when God speaks to him.

There is a capsule summary of the Christian quandary concerning predestination. God knows that the Pharaoh will be disobedient; but his foreknowledge is not the same as the actual occurrence. He will offer a peaceful solution that would hardly burden Pharaoh at all; He will give him a chance, and not raise His hand against the Egyptians until they actually defy Him.

It may seem a bit strange that God promises, or even commands, that the Hebrew women take their neighbors’ clothing and jewelry. Of course, God is God, and who can question His commandments? But there are two ways of looking at this.

First, God’s relationship with humanity was built over time, and at this early stage, His promises to His chosen people were often material and often at the expense of other, idolatrous tribes. The taking of Egyptians’ possessions is small potatoes compared to the slaughter God will wreak a bit later. It is always well to remember that God’s wrath is a terrible thing. If we make ourselves His enemies by the worship of idols, He will destroy us.

But there is justice in this instruction, also, for the Hebrews have been enslaved and abused for centuries. One could look at the instruction (or promise) to carry off this wealth as back wages or reparations.

What is the source of today's (October 20) prayer "For Unity?" Sorely needed in these times.

I'm almost reluctant to say, since I try to avoid taking "credit" for stuff. Maybe 40% of the prayers are things I have written. Sometimes they are by other people, and I often neglect to give them credit. The only important thing is what the prayers say, not who "wrote" them. Many times, I don't even know whether a prayer was written by me or somebody else.

I do try to give the source of an historic prayer, especially if the language comes from the Bible or a great saint or apostle.

Mason,

I want to thank you for yesterday's and today's "Daily Inspiration." Both were thought provoking and filled with the truth.

Thank you.

Over the years our country has been blessed with a peaceful society. Yes there have been factions which have downgraded a large part of the people who live in the United States. Now those people cry for freedom and equal rights for all. Now out of the shadows groups emerge that want to trample down the rights of those who deserve them. Are they any different than the Hitler or Stalin regime that slaughtered so many or the genocide that took place in Africa. We need our country back, only with God's grace can we accomplish this. PRAY HARD for GOD BLESSING FOR ALL.
