Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever.

Prayer for the Morning

Oh Lord, most heavenly Father, Almighty and everlasting God, who has safely brought me to the beginning of this day; I give you thanks for my creation, preservation, and all the blessings of my life. Grant that this day I fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger; but that all my doings, being governed by your will, may be righteous in your sight. Through Christ our Lord, I pray.

Prayer for Grace and Strength

Lord God, I pray that you will fill my heart with the blessing of your Holy Spirit. Grant me this day the strength to be temperate in all things, diligent in my duties, and patient under my afflictions. Direct me in all my ways. Give me grace to be just and upright in all my dealings; quiet and peaceable; full of compassion; and ready to do good to all people, according to my abilities and opportunities. For the sake of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,

Prayer of Surrender

All to Jesus, I surrender, all to Him I freely give.

I will ever love and trust Him, in His presence daily live.

Community of Prayer

Heavenly Lord, I know I am not alone saying these prayers or reading your Word this morning, but many people unknown to me, from all stations of life, have joined together in this brief moment of devotion. May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be among the community of all who pray in the name of Christ this morning, and remain among us always.

You can choose your sin, but you cannot choose the consequences.

Romans 7:21-25

So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members.

Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?

Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.

Notes on the Scripture

Which of us has never felt what Paul describes? We want to do good, but evil lies close at hand. We want to keep our bodies healthy but that carton of ice cream in the freezer seems to have hypnotic powers. We mean to give $20 to our church but they won't notice if we give $10 and we need the money badly. (Ice cream is expensive!) Our spouse or mother or teenager says something that sets us off, and even though we have resolved to answer more carefully, we spit out a bit of nastiness at them.

We are captive to a "law of sin" that lives inside of us, and there seems to be no way out of it. We certainly give in to sin more serious than the peccadillos described above. We lie, we justify ourselves, we are filled with pride and judgment of others, even though we know that this conduct is death to our soul. Who can help us?

We serve God in our minds. If we do that, Christ will help us. He will forgive our sins in death, and, actually, lessen our sins in life, through our faith.
