The older I get, the surer I get that I am not running the show.

The Director's Chair

Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.

~ Proverbs 19:21

The world is filled with control freaks of various sizes and persistence. At any given time, 95% of the world seems to think that it knows what should be done about a specific situation. The odd thing is that whether or not the person actually knows that facts, or has a background of information relevant to the subject, makes little difference to the strength of his opinion.

One of the delights of democratic government and free speech is that we get to hear them. Personally, no matter how down I might get on government, hearing some of the lunatics, with their simplistic and dunderheaded ideas that are matched in stupidity only by the strength of their conviction, makes the government look better by comparison!

Being in the Bible business, I hear all kinds of absurd things about the Bible and, again, the strength of a person's conviction about some Biblical “truth” has no apparent relationship to the evidence or reasoning behind it. And, often, they are in charge of a church or class.

Jesus said, “Don’t let anyone call you ‘Rabbi,’ for you have only one teacher, and all of you are equal as brothers and sisters. And don’t address anyone here on earth as ‘Father,’ for only God in heaven is your spiritual Father. And don’t let anyone call you ‘Teacher,’ for you have only one teacher, the Messiah.” (Matthew 23:8-10)

You know that you have met someone special, in a church setting, when he is the leader of a class or group or the entire church, and does not try to interpret the Bible for you without telling you that's what he's doing; or who lets you know right away that he's not in charge and that he's not a teacher. The truth is, we are not in charge of hardly anything. We are like actors in a play that has a cast of 7 billion people. Every person who thinks he is the director is mistaken. And it is in learning that we are actors, not directors, and that God (who actually knows what He is doing, unlike all the people) has things in hand.

Learn to let go of control and allow God to be in charge. It is a wonderful feeling, even if it scares some people with natural control anxieties. God has a plan and if you just do what the “Director” tells you to do, and let Him (instead of your mind) be in control, everything will turn out great.

Lord, let me always remember that it is you, not me, who is in control of the universe. Amen.
