“Work hard and cheerfully at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.”
When you think of handmade, what comes to mind?
When I was a child and would return home from a long day at school when I opened the door of the house there was the aroma of a freshly baked handmade pie. Ah-h-h-h, the aroma of baked goodies just out of the oven, there is nothing like it. By the way, my favorite pie was, and still is, chocolate cream! YUM!
In the Amish area you have many choices of daily handmade sweets, breads, jams, and jellies of every liking, and also a wide variety of local cheese and meats from which to choose.
The Amish family recipes are sought after and served in restaurants, inns, and bed and breakfast establishments. A traditional, and also popular meal, is crispy broasted chicken served with creamy mashed potatoes with gravy. Are you hungry yet?
In a recent issue of the magazine Ohio's Amish Country an article states that since times have changed, many of the Amish men realize that farming is not as productive as it used to be. Therefore, to provide the needed income for their families, some of them have “turned to woodworking as a way of making a living”. Amish handcrafted solid wood furniture has become “a booming business” and the furniture is well known around the world.
Locally handmade quilts, wall hangings, and placemats of various designs and colors are popular items for sale. Some people refer to the area as the “quilt country”.
We were handmade by God! In the Book of Genesis we are told that God created us “in His Own image.”. He designed us “after Himself”. John wrote that God “created everything there is”.
Because God created us, He has given us special gifts. For example, your gift may be baking chocolate cream pies! Or someone else's gift may be woodworking, or making jams and jellies, or designing and hand-making quilts. Solomon tells us in Ecclesiastes 9:10 that, “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.” Paul tells us in Ephesians to use our hands for “honest work”.
We exist because God created us. Our purpose in life is to glorify Him. He gave us work to do with our hands, and special gifts to do it. We should do it with a happy face. Especially when you make handmade chocolate cream pies, if that is your gift. If you want to make a vanilla cream pie that will be OK too!
Why not share with someone your special God-given gift, and that good deed will give you a spiritual lift, bring a smile to someone's face, and glorify God.
Lord God, thank You for giving all of us special gifts. Constantly remind us that we were handmade by You, and our purpose is to glorify You. Amen.
