Hope And Comfort During Dark Days
“Through the Lord's mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. The Lord is my portion, says my soul, therefore I hope in Him!”
~ Lamentations 3:22-24
A yellowed newspaper clipping says, “When the days are dark, men need its light. When times are hard, men need its comfort. When the outlook is discouraging, men need its confidence. When despair is abroad, men need its word of hope. There are luxuries that may well be spared. There are even necessities that can be curtailed. But the Bible, indispensable at all times, is still more indispensable in times like these today.-Sel.”
Life in general is full of smiles, troubles, trials, and sadness. It is easy to find someone to share all your happy times. But, when you have troubles or trials, often people are as “scarce as hen's teeth”!
We all have our happy days, they are the easy days and there is sun shining all around us. But during our dark days we need light, comfort, and hope.
Least you think for one minute that dark days do not come to my doorstep, think again! A recent example is: pets always have been very important in my life, and in my husbands. I do not know how many of you have pets, but I know some of you will relate to the following.
Our little darling 14+ year old black and white cat got ill suddenly, and by the next morning she was at the Vet's office. After she received medication, and we received instructions from the Vet, we gave her our undivided attention for the next 48 hours. By the end of the 48 hours, she was fading quickly, and by that afternoon she was beginning to experience some pain. After a heartbreaking discussion, we took her back to the Vet to have her put to sleep so she would not have to suffer.
These types of decisions are very difficult to make, and I am sure many of you can attest to that. My husband said, “Now we are very sad, but in time, we will begin to remember all the years of happy times when she brought smiles into our life.” And, there were many happy times that she brought sunlight into our lives.
How do we switch on the light bulb during the dark days? Where do we go to find hope and comfort?
The place to go for the true source of all comfort and hope is in the Bible. His Word is “a light for (our) path” in the darkness. In the Book of Hebrews it says, “...the Word of God is full of living power.” God is faithful and His faithfulness “extends to every generation”. He renews His compassion and mercy every morning to every one of us. He will “supply all our needs” for not only all the happy times, but also for the dark times. His endless supply of comfort and hope never run out like the retail store shelves sometimes do.
In the Book of Hebrews it says: “...we who have fled to Him for refuge can take new courage, for we can hold on to His promise with confidence. This confidence is like a strong and trustworthy anchor for our soul.”(NLT)
Lord God, thank You for Your promises that bring comfort and hope to all of us. Help us to remember to always run to You when we are in darkness. Amen.
