God Spoke

“The heavens tell of the glory of God, The skies display his marvelous craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known. They speak without a sound or a word; their voice is silent in the skies; yet their message has gone out to all the earth, and their words to all the world.”

~Psalm 19:1-3

The sun's rays cast shadows into the pine forest in the back of our home. The shadows are changing, and they are announcing the beginning of a new season. For areas of the United States, summer is coming to an end, and fall is beginning to arrive. As I watch the shadows constantly reflecting differently on the forest, a yellow butterfly casually flittered in and out of the trees. The feathers on the wild turkey are changing colors. Fall is arriving soon. God spoke!

In the Old Testament, God spoke with people beginning with Adam and Eve. One individual was Job. In the Book of Job, God spoke from a “whirlwind” to Job by asking him many questions.

God spoke: “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?”. “Who defined the boundaries of the sea...?” “Have you ever commanded the morning to appear and caused the dawn to rise in the east” “Where does the light come from, and where does the darkness go?” (Job 38 NLT).

God kept speaking: “Who makes the wild donkey wild?” “Have you given the horse its strength or clothed its neck with a flowing mane?” “Are you the one who makes the hawk soar and spread its wings to the south?” (Job 39 NLT). “Take a look at the mighty hippopotamus. I made it, just as I made you...it is a prime example of God's amazing handiwork...only its Creator can threaten it.” (Job 40 NLT).

Job replied to God: “I am nothing---how could I ever find the answers...” (Job 40:4 NLT). “I know that You can do anything, and no one can stop You” (emphasis mine). (Job 42:2 NLT).

In the New Testament there is an example of God speaking to a man via an “angel of God”. The man was Cornelius. Cornelius was a Roman, and he was a godly man. He was an individual who prayed to God on a regular basis. Scripture stated: “he (Cornelius) had a vision in which he saw an angel of God coming toward him”, and the angel called him by name. The angel asked him to “send some men down to Joppa to find a man named Simon Peter.” (Acts 10 NLT). God spoke! Cornelius obeyed. Simon Peter was found.

God will touch those people whose desire is to be more familiar with Him. God can speak whether it is through a sun ray casting shadows, a horse, a hawk, a hippopotamus, wild turkeys and donkeys, angel of God, or possible directly to you through a whirlwind. God's people ought to “...listen carefully to what God the LORD is saying, for He speaks peace to His faithful people. (Psalm 85:8 NLT).

How did He speak to you today?

Lord God, thank You for continuing to speak to us. Help us to listen and to be aware of Your voice. Amen.
