We need Thee

Every Hour We Need Thee

“When doubts filled my mind, Your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer.”

~Psalm 94:19

Annie Sherwood Hawks was born in New York in 1835. As a young person she began writing poems. At the age of fourteen a newspaper published one.

At the age of twenty-four she married Charles H. Hawks. The Pastor of the church where they attended encouraged her writing, and he wrote the music to accompany the poems/hymns. She died in 1918. During her life-time, she wrote 400 hymns.

Among the most famous hymns, that brings the most comfort to countless people is, “I need Thee Every Hour”. Verse 1, 3, and the refrain states: “I need Thee every hour, most gracious Lord; no tender voice like thine can peace afford...I need Thee every hour, in joy or pain; come quickly and abide, or life is vain...(Refrain) I need Thee, O I need Thee; every hour I need Thee; O bless me now, my Savior, I come to Thee...”.

According to the website greatchristianhymns.com, Hawks wrote this hymn because: “One day, as a young wife and mother of 37 years of age, I was busy with my regular household tasks. Suddenly, I became so filled with the sense of nearness to the Master that, wondering how one could live without Him, either in joy or pain, these words, I Need Thee Every Hour, were ushered into my mind, the thought at once taking full possession of me...”

Later in her life, when she became widowed, she said: “I did not understand at first why this hymn had touched the great throbbing heart of humanity. It was not until long after, when the shadow fell over my way, the shadow of a great loss, that I understood something of the comforting power in the words which I had been permitted to give out to others in my hour of sweet serenity and peace.”.

For God's people, when unavoidable challenges present themselves, and you “need Thee every hour”, His comforting power will come to each person by various methods. For example, in the case of Annie Sherwood Hawks, He used her own words in a hymn as the means to deliver His consolation.

Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, seemed to grasp that God was with him “every hour” when he stated: “I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth--that God governs in the affairs of men.”

As you “need Thee every hour”, make an effort to remain strong during your challenge. As you go to the Savior, He will choose a way to convey comfort and renewed hope to you. In the soothing detection of His “tender voice”, you will receive His peace and “sweet serenity” by understanding that He is always with you. Jesus stated in Matthew 28:20: “...be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age”, and that is every hour!

Lord God, thank You that You are with us every hour. Help us to stay focused on Your ability to supply our need. Amen.
