Being Happy

“You're blessed when you meet Lady Wisdom, when you make friends with Madame Insight. She's worth far more than money in the bank; her friendship is better than a big salary. Her value exceeds all the trappings of wealth; nothing you could wish for holds a candle to her. With one hand she gives long life, with the other she confers recognition. Her manner is beautiful, her life wonderfully complete. She's the very Tree of Life to those who embrace her. Hold her tight--and be blessed!”

~Proverbs 3:16-18 (The Message)

I enjoy decoding personalized license plates and trying to figure out their meaning. Some of them are relatively easy, while others are extremely obscure. Recently I saw a license plate that stated: “SUR HAPY” which I am assuming meant the driver was sure happy. Good for that person! Webster's dictionary describes happy as: “(a) feeling or providing contented pleasure of joy.”

For centuries there have been people who are not happy with their life and they continue to search for how they can find lasting happiness. Many look back on their life and think about how they used to be happy, but then life came along with disappointments and/or difficult challenges, and they lost their happiness. Unlike centuries ago, today there are many self-help books, happiness questionnaires that will score your happiness level, and various advertisements that convey ideas of how a person can become wise, contented, and happy. However, it is interesting to note that most times it is suggested that happiness and/or joy can only be obtained through worldly pleasures, and not through seeking godly wisdom. Later on, worldly pleasures alone are found to be unfulfilling.

There are terrific illustrations in the Holy Bible of people who are called wise and examples of how they practiced godly wisdom in their lives. A few examples of those who practiced godly wisdom are: Solomon, who was the third King of Israel who built God's Temple in Jerusalem. He was also a wise author/teacher, and he stated: “A happy heart is good medicine and a cheerful mind works healing...” Joseph was a wise leader and he listened to God's wisdom and prepared the nation for a major famine. Joshua was a wise teacher, he obeyed God and led the people into the Promised Land. Paul was a wise messenger who spent time communicating God's love to all who would listen to him. Because of the teaching and practiced godly wisdom the people were shown how to become happier and to experience deeper faith.

For a Christian to desire to have wisdom to be steadfastly happy/joyful, and to walk as a wise person, that is better than desiring all the rubies in the world. John Wesley stated: “There is but One, He that sitteth in heaven, who is able to teach man wisdom (practical discernment).”

Once you have met “Lady Wisdom”, and make friends with “Madame Insight” you will be “SUR HAPY”, contented, peaceful, joyful, and extremely blessed with knowledge and understanding. Nothing in this whole world can hold a candle to them. So, embrace them, and hold on tightly to them, because wisdom is the “Tree of Life” and there is nothing compared to it to be happy.

Almighty God, thank You for generously giving wisdom to us. Amen.
