Gospel of Matthew 4:1-11

Jesus is Tempted by Satan

After his baptism, the Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. He fasted forty days and forty nights, and was hungry. And the tempter came and said, "If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become bread." But Christ answered, "It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God."

Then the devil took him into the holy city (Jerusalem) and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down: for it is written: He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and, On their hands they shall bear thee up, Lest haply thou dash thy foot against a stone." Jesus replied, "Again it is written: Thou shalt not make trial of the Lord thy God."

Again, the devil took Jesus to a high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, their riches and glory; and he said, "All these things will I give to you, if you fall down and worship me." Jesus said, "Go away, Satan: for it is written: Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve." So the devil left him; and angels came and ministered to him.

Psalm 19:9-12

(King James Version)

9 Because you have made the LORD, who is my refuge, Even the Most High, your dwelling place,

10 No evil shall befall you, Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;

11 For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways.

12 In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.
