Gospel of Matthew, 18:21-35

Seventy times seven

Peter asked him, "Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often shall I forgive him? Seven times?"

Jesus answered, "I do not say, seven times; but seventy times seven.

The kingdom of heaven could be likened to a king, settling his accounts with his servants. One who owed him ten thousand talents was brought before him. But because he did not have the wherewithal to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made.

The servant fell down and worshipped him, saying, 'Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.' And the king, being moved with compassion, released him, and forgave the debt.

But when the same servant found one of his fellow-servants, who owed him a hundred shillings, he grabbed him by the throat, saying, 'Pay me what you owe.' The fellow-servant fell down and pleaded with him, saying, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you.' But he would not. Instead, he had him put in prison until he paid what was due.

When his fellow-servants saw what had been done, they were unhappy. They went to their lord and told him what had occurred. The lord summoned him, and chastised him: 'You wicked servant, I forgave all your debt, because you pleaded with me. Shouldn't you have had mercy on your fellow-servant, just as I had mercy on you?' His lord grew angry and delivered him to the tormentors, until he could pay all that was due.

So will my heavenly Father do to you, if any of you do not forgive your brother from your hearts."
