Prayers

Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever.

Amen.

Prayer for the Morning

Oh God the King eternal, who divides the day from the darkness, and has turned the shadow of death into the light of morning; I pray that this day you will incline my heart to keep your commandments, driving temptation from my mind. Guide my feet into the way of peace; that having done your will with cheerfulness while it was day, I may, when the night comes, rejoice in giving you thanks for a day lived in your presence; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Prayer for Purity of Thought

Almighty God, who alone gave me the breath of life, and alone can keep alive in me the holy desires your Spirit brings; I pray to you, in the name of your infinite compassion, to sanctify my thoughts and endeavors this day; that I may not begin to act without a pure intention or continue it without your blessing. And grant that, having the eyes of my mind opened to behold things invisible and unseen, I may in heart be inspired by your wisdom, and in work be upheld by your strength, and in the end be accepted by you as your faithful servant; through Jesus Christ our Savior.

Amen.

Prayer for Life

O God, who for our redemption gave your only-begotten Son to the death of the cross, and by his glorious resurrection delivered us from the power of our enemy: Grant us so to die daily to sin, that we may evermore live with him in the joy of his resurrection; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Amen.

Benediction

Finally, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, let me think about these things. What I have learned and received, let me do; and the God of peace be with us all.

Amen.

Psalm 118:24-26

This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

O Lord, save us; O Lord, grant us success.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. From the house of the Lord we bless you.

Colossians 1:1-14

Rescued from the Power of Darkness

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,

To the saints and faithful brothers and sisters in Christ in Colossae:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father.

In our prayers for you we always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. You have heard of this hope before in the word of the truth, the gospel that has come to you. Just as it is bearing fruit and growing in the whole world, so it has been bearing fruit among yourselves from the day you heard it and truly comprehended the grace of God. This you learned from Epaphras, our beloved fellow servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf, and he has made known to us your love in the Spirit.

For this reason, since the day we heard it, we have not ceased praying for you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of God's will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you may lead lives worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, as you bear fruit in every good work and as you grow in the knowledge of God. May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Notes on the Scripture

Darkness is used in Scripture to express a great many things. In the Bible, as in most human society, darkness is tied to sorrow; people who have lost a loved one find the nights the hardest time to bear. We talk about a depressed person being in a dark or gloomy state of mind. In our culture, we wear black to express mourning. But God, in both the old and new covenants, "rescued us from the power of darkness"? He has helped us in our worldly problems and struggles, and has promised a much greater help in the eternal night of death. We pray every night in gratitude for our daily bread. The mere fact that there is a sun that comes up in the morning is a miracle of deliverance that is repeated every day.

Darkness is even more strongly associated with ignorance. The blind are in permanent darkness, and blindness to God's Words leave us in the dark. The Gospel of John tells us that the world was darkness, except for the light which was with God, and was God, and which became manifest on earth in the person of Christ. People who are converted to Christianity "see the light". One of the fundamental purposes of Christ’s mission was shining his light into the darkness of human ignorance. I thank God that many of us, though we know comparatively little, do know that we were born blind, but that we can now see. God has, therefore, delivered us, in that sense, from the power of darkness.

A Milestone for Daily Prayer!

As of April 23, 2010, dailyprayer.us has reached the milestone of 10,000 hits per month! Since we have almost no budget and cannot afford a lot of advertising or "Search Engine Optimization", the growth is mostly word-of-mouth or from search engines. The site is a lot of work, and it makes me really happy to know that there are people who use it.

Also, dailyprayer.us has made it to the first page of Google, Bing, and Ask.com under the search terms "daily prayer" and/or "daily prayers". I just pray that my work honors God and that my happiness is devoid of any pride.

If it is late in the day and you would rather read prayers appropriate to the evening, there is a longer set of evening prayers here, or you can replace the prayers above with an evening devotional:
