Bibles & Bible Commentary
Our first choice for a mid-level study Bible.
The classic. Available in paperback (lightly used) for $32.
This is really a nice Bible and the extra money goes into quality. Crisp large print, perfect for typical age-related vision problems. One warning - this is what I would call "large print", @ 12-point. If you need really "giant" print, look for 16-pt or 18-pt.
Not for everyone! But this is far and away the best of the "Bible in contemporary language" attempts. I would not recommend it to anyone as a study Bible or, unless they were a teenager, a primary reading Bible. But it is clever and often amusing; I especially love The Message for Proverbs and sometimes use them on the Daily Devotion. And anyone, if they sit down and read it, will learn things they didn't know.
This is a must-have for reading the Epistles. They are much easier to understand in Phillips' translation than any other. "Modern English" is a misnomer, as this reads more traditionally than most Bibles. Phillips has a wonderful writing style and rewrote the New Testament, basically, so that it is easier to understand without being dumbed-down or losing subtle inference.
Fiction and General Nonfiction
This hugely popular new novel is about an orphan girl during the Depression. Highly recommended.
