Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever.

Prayer for God to Dwell with Us Today

Holy Jesus, who has promised that if we love you, you and the Father will love us and come to us and make your home with us, I give you my love without reservation. Your words are sacred and I aspire to live by them, this day and always, and I glorify you for your sacrifice of pain and death, made out of your love for us, that all who follow you might find salvation and eternal life.

Bless me this day to live with your Spirit, to resist temptation to evil, and to show your joy and love to all. Make your home with me, that I might be truly blessed, I pray,

Prayer for the Mentally Ill

Lord Christ, unto whom every life is precious: Your eye is on the littlest sparrow, and I know you watch over me and all my fellow beings, hoping at every turn that we may be free from the price of sin. I pray today for all those who suffer from darkness of mind. Be with them, I pray, in their torment; comfort them and their friends and families.

And if it be your will, free them from the demons of the mind, that we understand so little about. Bless the doctors and scientists who work to relieve mental illness and the people who care for the ill, and let your Spirit guide them to the alleviation of human suffering. And where a person cannot be healed, bless and keep his soul, I pray, that his lost mind may not be held against the salvation of his soul, and the eventual perfection he might find by your grace. Oh Holy Jesus, look down upon your lost sheep with mercy, I pray.

And now, as a little child, let me abide in you all this day, oh Christ, so that when you appear I may have confidence and not shrink from you in shame at your coming. For I know that you are righteous, and I am sure that I will be made righteous only by my life in you.

Have No Fear

“So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops.

And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered.

Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.

Notes on the Scripture

The great confidence of Christianity is this: Truth will triumph. Three times in this passage Jesus tells his disciples — and us — to have no fear. To bear Christian witness, we must fully grasp that the judgments of eternity will correct the judgments of time. Nothing is covered (i.e. concealed) that will not, eventually, be uncovered.

aving assured the apostles of the inevitability of truth, Christ tells them to proclaim it. His words are odd in one respect, for when he says “what I tell you in the dark”, we must think: Christ was hardly shy about telling his good news in the open. Nor was he known for whispering! So, he is not talking about his public speeches, his Sermon on the Mount. He is telling them, and us, that we will learn the truth in prayer.

In all areas of life, truth can often best be found in the quiet and dark, where passion can be cooled and a train of thought followed into depths, depths that are hard to find in crowded or noisy places. Great thinkers always work alone; at least some of the time, anyone who seeks wisdom must seek it in private.

But then, what to do with it? A brilliant truth may germinate in the dark, but it must find the light to be communicated to others. As Thomas Grey wrote, in his marvelous Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard:

So, Jesus tells his disciples to shout it from the housetops! And what does this mean we should do? Witness to our faith; say it right out loud to other people. Jesus is King and we have every faith in Him, that by Him we have been saved from sin and will live with God for eternity. As Christian writer Alistair Begg puts it:
