Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever.

Amen.

Our “Virtual Sunday Church” video came without identifying the choir or church, but the building appears to be Ely Cathedral in Cambridgeshire, England. The hymn is set to a traditional Irish melody. Delightful.

For a Heart Open to God’s Word

God, as you gave us the sun to lighten our days, so you have given us your Word to lighten our minds and our souls. I pray that you will pour out on me your Spirit as I pray today, that my heart and mind may be opened to your Word, and that I may learn and accept your will for my life.

Shine within my heart, loving God, the pure light of your divine knowledge; open the eyes of my mind and the ears of my heart to receive your Word, this day and always,

Amen.

Saint Francis’ Prayer of Praise

You are holy, Lord, the only God,
and your deeds are wonderful.

St. Francis and
the sad donkey.

You are strong;
You are great.
You are the Most High,
You are almighty,
You, holy Father, are
King of heaven and earth.

You are Three and One,
Lord God, all good.
You are Good, all Good, supreme Good,
Lord God, living and true.

You are love,
You are wisdom,
You are humility,
You are endurance.
You are rest,
You are peace.
You are joy and gladness.
You are justice and moderation.
You are all our riches,
And you suffice for us.

You are beauty,
You are gentleness.
You are our protector,
You are our guardian and defender,
You are courage.
You are our haven and our hope.

You are our faith,
Our great consolation.
You are our eternal life,
Great and wonderful Lord,
God Almighty,
Merciful savior.

Amen.

Closing Prayer

And finally, grant me O Lord, I pray, the lamp of charity which never fails, that it may burn in me and shed its light on those around me, and that by its brightness I may share a vision of that holy City, where dwells the true and never-failing Light, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Think of the day ahead in terms of God with you, and visualize health, strength, guidance, purity, calm confidence, and victory as the gifts of His presence.

Our Fuel

He Himself is the fuel our spirits were designed to burn, or the food our spirits were designed to feed on. There is no other.

Psalm 13 (NKJV)

For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.
H

ow long, O Lord? Will You forget me forever?
How long will You hide Your face from me?
How long shall I take counsel in my soul,
Having sorrow in my heart daily?
How long will my enemy be exalted over me?

Consider and hear me, O Lord my God; Enlighten my eyes,
Lest I sleep the sleep of death;
Lest my enemy say,
“I have prevailed against him”;
Lest those who trouble me rejoice when I am moved.

But I have trusted in Your mercy;
My heart shall rejoice in Your salvation.
I will sing to the Lord,
Because He has dealt bountifully with me.

Notes on the Scripture

Psalm 13 is one of the most “musical” psalms. It is very much in the style of David, with two or three phrases in each verse, which are related in some way: the second might restate or amplify the first (as in line one), or might have a causal relationship (as in the last line).

The psalm divides into two distinct parts. The first two verses bewail God’s absence in the singer’s life, and the terrible consequences. The final verse rejoices in God’s gifts and reaffirm the poet’s devotion and thanks. Thus the feeling expressed is a movement from desperation to hope and thanks, something that many of us have experienced in our prayer.

Mephibosheth kneeling before David
Mephibosheth kneeling before David
(from the Morgan Bible)

Who of us has not felt that God has hidden His face from him? We might even cast blame on God when things are going badly. It is a common temptation, when trouble lasts long, to think that it will last always.

But God allows us to suffer no more than He himself, for Christ was beaten bloody and tortured to death. What will we ever suffer that is worse? Thereafter, God’s most faithful children suffered likewise, and all of the apostles except John were beaten, stoned, imprisoned, murdered. They also lived lives of poverty; they were the equivalent of modern minimum wage earners.

But we let life and society raise our expectations, and then we blame God when they are not met. And yet, this is the very time to strengthen our faith. “Those who have long been without joy,” said Matthew Henry, “begin to be without hope.” Yet, we know that life will deal us terrible blows; our faith does not tell us that we will avoid sorrow, but rather that we will overcome it. Life is a trial. It is a test of our resolved to find God and eternal life.

Thus, says the Psalmist, I will trust in God and rejoice at my salvation, for it is faith that will sustain us through any ordeal we may face, if we only hold fast. Life itself is a gift from God, and nothing that is taken was not first given.

Email Issues

Our new server is working pretty well, although there are still some configuration issues to work out. Most important: I am not currently able to access email addressed to Daily Prayer, i.e. “admin@dailyprayer.us”.

This is doubly vexing, because I use the Daily Prayer email account to keep track of donations and send “thank you” notes. All donations are being received and recorded! But I am going to have to get the email untangled before I can get thank-yous and other communications worked out.

In the meantime, you can always contact me at my personal email, masonbarge@gmail.com.

Memory Verse

Romans 8:18: I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

Congratulations on your successful migration to a new server.

You may know that there are spots where there’s a little character overlay or overlay with images such as:

You are holy (Above) the “A” graphic overlays the “o” in “you”

Thanks for pointing this out. I usually don't access the mobile site and so formatting errors get neglected. I'll put this high on the "to do" list, it really shouldn't be hard to correct.

Thank you very much for achieving this transfer without too much loss of transmission.

Everything works well here in the UK .
