The Lion, Wild Turkeys, Squirrels, Birds, And Cold Weather

“You are worthy, O LORD, our God...For You created everything, and it is for Your pleasure that they exist and were created.”

~Revelation 4:11

Lorie Hill wrote a poem about the month of March and it is titled, “In Like A Lion, Out Like A Lamb”. It reads as follows: “March roars in like a lion...So fierce...The wind so cold...It seems to pierce. The month rolls on...And Spring draws near...And March goes out...Like a lamb so dear”.

March has the reputation regarding the weather, if it begins as a lion, it will go out like a lamb. However, for many areas of the United States the “lion” arrived early as they have been feeling the effects of frigid weather since February, and March 1 was more snow and cold. As I am writing this devotion the Deep South is experiencing a deep freeze. The thermometer outside my window is reading 29 (Fahrenheit) degrees. That temperature right now would feel warm to my northern friends as many are experiencing below zero (Fahrenheit) temps. They are anxiously awaiting the dawn of spring.

The wintertime weather reminds me of Psalm 147. It states: “He (the Lord) sends His orders to the world--how swiftly His word flies! He sends the snow like white wool; He scatters frost upon the ground like ashes. He hurls the hail like stones...Who can stand against His freezing cold? Then, at His command, it all melts, He sends His winds, and the ice thaws”.

Heidi Satterberg wrote: “Watch for winter's little friends as they gather through the day; like birds and squirrels and bunnies, too, they feed and romp and play”.

A flock of 30+ wild turkeys were walking along the edge of the preserve this cold morning. They were pecking, scratching the ground, and eating. The squirrels were eating alongside the birds on our birdfeeder. They had survived the previous cold night very well.

I continue to marvel at God's handiwork regarding the wild animals. As I watched the wild turkeys this morning, I noticed the iridescent feathers that provided protection to their bodies from the cold. I could not help but think about Psalms where it states numerous times of how our loving God takes care of not only His people, but also the animals. David stated that “You care for people and animals alike, O LORD”, and “You satisfy the hunger and thirst of every living thing”.

God's people ought to remain awe-struck because of the beauty and wonderment of His creation. An anonymous writer of Psalm 104 prompts individuals that the LORD made “the springs pour water into ravines, so streams gush down from the mountains”. The streams “provide water for all the animals”, and their thirst is satisfied. The “birds nest” in the trees “beside the streams and sing among the branches”. Our LORD has created “a variety of things”, and “the earth is full of (His) creatures”.

As March roars on, be assured that God provides and protects all the animals including the wild turkeys, squirrels, and birds. But there is more, “He will shield you (God's people) with His wings...He will shelter you with His feathers”.

Lord God, we praise You and thank You for the creation of the heavens and the earth and everything in them. Amen.
