Singing During The Rainstorm
“Oh, that we might know the LORD! Let us press on to know Him! Then He will respond to us as surely as the arrival of dawn or the coming of rains of spring”.

“Singin' In The Rain” is a song with lyrics by Arthur Freed and music by Nacio Herb Brown, published in 1929. The song is probably best known as the core of the musical film Singin' In The Rain (1952), in which Gene Kelly danced to the song while splashing through puddles during a rainstorm.
A few lyrics are: “Just singin' in the rain...What a glorious feelin'...I'm happy again. I'm laughing at clouds. So dark up above...The sun's in my heart...And I'm ready for love. Let the stormy clouds chase...Everyone from the place...Come on with the rain...I've a smile on my face...Just singin'...Singin' in the rain”.
It is normal for many people to say there should be no rainstorms in their life. Rainstorms do arrive and often in downpours such as, sorrow from losing a loved one; job loss; financial downturn; or loss of home.
Abraham Lincoln, former President of the United States, witnessed rainstorms and downpours during his lifetime. It was during his sorrow of the death of his 11 year old son, he turned to Phineas Gurley, pastor of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington. Lincoln expressed in a letter: “In this sad world of ours, sorrow comes to all; and, to the young, it comes with bitterest agony, because it takes them unawares. The older have learned to ever expect it”. For Lincoln at this time he was facing a stormy cloud. It appears it was difficult for him to have “sunshine in his heart” and put a “smile on his face”.
As written by Henry Clay Trumbull, a story goes like this: The floods washed away a man's home and mill, and it was all the poor man had in the world. But as he stood on the scene of his loss, after water had subsided, broken-hearted and discouraged, he saw something shining in the bank which the waters had washed bare. “It looks like gold”, the man said. “It was gold.” The flood which removed all he had, made him rich. When life produces a tragedy(s), sometimes it leads to a blessing, as it did for the “poor man”.
In today's society there are many ways to help people to sing during a rainstorm of trails. For example, in our local newspaper there was an article written by Brett Graff of the Miami Herald about a therapy called “retail therapy”. According to the article there are retail professionals who specialize in helping people “pick themselves up after traveling through one of life's let-downs”. In other words, they will assist you in spending your money at their retail establishment to help you “look and feel great” about yourself. Would it not be delightful if “retail therapy” would guarantee contentment during a rainstorm?
God's people ought to be singin' in the rain during dark clouds and a downpour. It is up to them as to how they choose to respond. The Bible is full of examples of men and women of faith who endured many. Ponder upon their examples, and become inspired by their faith.
Dark clouds and rainstorms allow us to stop and think intensely; long; and prudently. They reveal new depths in your soul. God's desire for His people is to stay fixed upon Him, and place your faith in Him to become equipped to be singin'; laughing; happy; and splashing through the puddles in the rain.
Lord God, thank You for equipping us to endure the rainstorm. Amen.
