Your Eyes Are The Mirrors
Of Your Soul
“Lord, we want our eyes to be opened!”
~ Matthew 20:33
Helen Keller is quoted as saying, “As selfishness and complaint pervert the mind, so love with its joy clears and sharpens the vision.”
Recently, a friend of mine had a cataract removed from her eye. The next day she was amazed that not only could she see clearly from the eye, but she could also see things that she had not seen for a long time. Her vision had been restored.
My family laughed and said that my grandmother had eyes in the back of her head because she always knew what was going on, even when her back was turned.
Often hind-sight is a positive way to see. How many times in your life have you had to make a decision and you could not see far enough ahead to know if you were making the right decision? There have been times in my life that hind-sight was the way I recognized that God was with me while I was making the decision.
When Jesus taught the people, He told many stories(parables). In the Book of Matthew the disciples ask Him why He taught in that manner. He told the disciples it gave them the ability see and to understand who He was. It also allowed the people to see Him, and what He did, because “they don't really see” who He is. Their eyes were closed to the fact that Jesus was their Messiah, so He felt the parables helped overcome this and give them the proper vision.
On the other hand, when Jesus and His disciples left the city of Jericho there were two blind beggars sitting along the road. As Jesus came towards them, they cried out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!” The crowd that usually followed Jesus tried to shush them, but the beggars were determined and they shouted louder, “Lord Son of David, have mercy on us!” Upon hearing their voices, Jesus stopped and said to them, “What do you want Me to do for you?” They answered Him by saying: “Lord, we want to see.” Jesus had compassion for them and He reached out with His hand and “touched their eyes.” Instantly their eye sight was restored.
As Christians, please pray for the people whose eyes are still blind to the fact that Jesus is the Messiah. Pray that their spiritual “eyes” of their heart will be “enlightened” so they may know the hope of God's calling and that they will accept Jesus as the Messiah. Why not pray for your families, your neighbors, the people at your workplace, a person working in a store, your mailman, and the people in the car next to you at a red light. You may be the only person who ever prayed for their eyes to be opened!
Oswald Chambers wrote, “We have to pray with our eyes on God.“ Let's keep our “vision sharpened” by focusing on Him, praying constantly that we will retain the desire in our heart to grow spiritually deeper and to be aware of the needs of others around us. We are comforted by knowing the eyes of God watch over us.
“But blessed are your eyes, because they see.”
Lord, God, thank You for opening our spiritual eyes to the understanding that Jesus Christ is the Messiah and that He sits at the right hand of God. Help us to be constantly aware of the people around us who have their eyes closed to You. Amen.
