The Value Of Little Things

“...by His mighty power at work within us, He is able to accomplish infinitely more than we would ever dare to ask or hope.”

~Ephesians 3:20b

Fall has arrived in the United States. Chill is in the air, and early morning frost is often on the ground. They are announcing the rapidly approaching wintertime.

In the Fall there are many little and large things that happen that make a valuable impact. A variety of examples are: the leaves on the trees are turning from various shades of green to brilliant colors of scarlet red, crimson, dark purple, yellow, and orange. The shadows on the earth are dancing in a different direction. My husband is busily pruning the rose bushes so they may flourish in their appointed time. The squirrels are burying acorns in anticipation of the next season.

Little things often result in valuable and large spiritual changes. Herbert Lockyer stated: “The great Protestant Reformation under Martin Luther may be traced to the hour when he discovered an old Bible in the Erfut Monastery.”.

In the Book of Proverbs 30, there are examples of four little creatures who contain a large supply of wisdom. They are: (1) Ants can teach about “preparation”. They “are creatures of little strength, yet they store up their food in the summer”.; (2) Hyraxes a/k/a Rock Badgers can teach about “wise building”. They “are creatures of little power, yet they make their home in the crags”.; (3) Locusts can teach about “cooperation and order”. They “have no king, yet they advance together in ranks”.; (4) Lizards can teach about “fearlessness”. A “lizard can be caught with the hand, yet it is found in kings' palaces.”(NLT).

Jesus, in His teaching about the Kingdom of Heaven, told the parable of a little mustard seed. The mustard seed was the smallest seed the farmers planted. Jesus stated: “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds can come and perch in its branches.”. The parable may have been used “to show that the Kingdom of Heaven has small beginnings, but will grow and produce large results”.(NLT).

Franz Kafka stated: “Even the merest gesture is holy if it is filled with faith.”. For the asking, God's people are filled with His wisdom. When they are filled with wisdom, it produces results and spiritual changes. Display your faith like the Fall tree leaves presenting their magnificent colors. Like the rose bushes, allow Almighty God to keep pruning your faith. By doing little things for others you will flourish, and so will they.

Lord God, thank You for earthly examples of little things. Teach us the value of them so we may glorify You through our lives. Amen.
