Keep Looking Up

“My eyes shall (look with favor) upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with Me.”

~Psalm 101:6a

How many people go about their daily routines looking downward; not looking up or around them? They just march to the drumbeat of the day, and move forward. Antonio Porchia stated: “If you do not raise your eyes you will think you are the highest point”.

When I was a young child my parents and I traveled to New York City to visit family. Coming from a very small town in the Midwest, and viewing through a child's eyes, the hustle and bustle of New York City was an exciting adventure, but it was also scary.

While there I went shopping for a new doll. Somehow I became distracted by the beauty of so many dolls available. For me, there seemed to be hundreds of dolls on display, though I am sure the number was much smaller than “hundreds”.

When I eventually looked up to tell my family that I had narrowed the choice to one, none of them were visible to me. Because of my young age, I thought I was abandoned. I only saw what was immediately surrounding me, and that was all strangers.

With fear in my heart, I called out to my family. Immediately they came rushing to me from the other side of the counter. The point is, their eyes were watching me all the time, but my eyes did not look high enough to see them.

For God's people, it is a difficult time living in today's society. They can easily be distracted by worldly pleasures or obligations. Oftentimes, the feeling of God's abandonment comes creeping into their hearts. There is a tendency to move forward and refrain from looking up to the Lord for direction and wisdom.

But, if His people will look to the heavens and stay focused on Him and His Word, He will come rushing to them when they call out. Then the path in their life will become a little easier to navigate. Instead of their eyes looking intently forward, their faith will move forward; and that in turn will bring glory and honor to Him. They can then be at rest and welcome Him every day by knowing that He is not standing far away from them, even at that very moment in time.

Like my parents eyes that were constantly watching me in the store, 2 Chronicles 16:9 states: “The eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him” (NKJV). In order to be cognizant of Him, keep looking up!

Lord God, thank You for keeping Your eyes upon us during the daytime, and also in the dark of the night. Help us to keep our eyes looking upward to You so our spiritual life will keeping reaching higher points. Amen.
