2 Corinthians 12:9a

Why Choose Me?

“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

~II Corinthians 12:9a

Helen Steiner Rice wrote a poem titled, “Brighten The Corner Where You Are”. A few lines are: “We cannot all be famous or listed in Who's Who...But every person, great or small...has important work to do...For it's not the big celebrity...in a world of fame and praise...But it's doing unpretentiously...in undistinguished ways...The work that God assigned to us...unimportant as it seems...”. God uses common people to do His work.

An example in the Book of Judges of an ordinary person was Gideon who was a humble man. He was the son of Joash the Abiezrite who was a farmer in Israel during the period the Midianites were arriving on droves of camels to destroy the Israelites crops, and take away all their sheep, oxen, and donkeys. They stayed on the land until it was stripped bare. During this period, the Israelites had begun, once again, to worship other gods, therefore God allowed their enemies to harass them.

Gideon was a physically strong person, and one day while he was threshing wheat by hand in the pit of a grape press an Angel of the Lord “came and sat beneath the oak tree” and said, “Mighty hero, the Lord is with you”. Gideon answered, “Stranger, if the Lord is with us why has all this happened to us”.

Gideon was aware of not only his weaknesses, but he was also aware that his clan was the weakest in the whole tribe of Manasseh, and he was fearful that would prevent God's power from working. He asked the Lord, “How can I rescue Israel?”. However, the Lord assured him by saying to him, “I will be with you. And you will destroy the Midianites as if you were fighting against one man”. God chooses people like Gideon, in spite of their limitations, weakness, and failures.

The Lord was with Gideon and He did provide His presence and power to him. He provided an army of 300 men and because of Gideon's obedience to Him, victory was brought to Israel; and the Midianite army and their leaders were defeated. Millie Stamm stated: “Someone has said, Gideon's might was in his weakness, for in his weakness he was strong in the power of God”.

Today, God continues to choose common ordinary people to assist Him. Like Gideon they recognize their weaknesses, but they have a willingness to be His vessel. When He chooses you, He promises His presence and power will be with you.

A quote from a “DaySpring Perpetual Calendar” stated: “You are a priceless vessel...the love God wants the world to see...may you take every opportunity...He gives you to express it”.

God's people often wonder why He is choosing them for a task. One of the reasons He chose you is to brighten the corner exactly where you are with His light!

Lord God, thank You for Your presence and power. Help us to always be a willing vessel for You. Amen.
