Garden Flowers

“You are God's garden.”

~I Corinthians 3:9

When I was a child my family would always plant a garden in the backyard of our home. The garden's border was completely lined with flowers. The garden presented itself each day with a lovely greeting and a lovely aroma of perfume. There were abundant hollyhocks, sunflowers, zinnia, and lily of the valley. What a lovely bouquet.

Flowers have various meanings. For example, the meaning of hollyhock is fruitfulness. Sunflower is pure thoughts. In 1905 Henry Altemus wrote that a sunflower was called the sun worshipper because it tilts during the day to face the sun. White zinnia means goodness. Lily of the valley is sweetness. Each year the family garden was surrounded with fruitfulness, pure thoughts, goodness, and sweetness. No wonder the garden flourished!

Recently I noticed words of wisdom from recently purchased paper towels. Written on one towel was the flowers of all tomorrows are the seeds of today.

Jesus gives us a clue as to how much He appreciated the beauty of flowers. In one of His parables He used the example of the lily of the field. He said that Solomon even in all his splendor, was not arrayed like one of the lilies in the field. Oswald Chamber said:“The lily of the field can only grow in the surrounds that suit it. God knows exactly the kind of garden to put His lilies in, and they grow and take form unconsciously.”

How can we plant our garden with the holy seeds of fruitfulness, pure thoughts, goodness, and sweetness in our life and have them abundantly grow? There is only way and that is to keep our head tilted toward the Son.

Lord God thank you for Your Word that give us directions regarding how to plant holy seeds in our life so we may glorify You. Help us to always keep our eyes focused on You.Amen.
