There Is A Time

“There is a time for everything, a season for every activity under heaven. A time to be born and a time to die. A time to plant and a time to harvest.”

~Ecclesiastes 3:1-2

Helen Steiner Rice wrote a poem titled, “Little Springtime Prayer”. The poem went like this: “God, grant me this little springtime prayer...And make our hearts, grown cold with care...Once more aware of the waking earth...Now pregnant with life and bursting with birth. For how can man feel any fear or doubt...When on every side all around and about...The March winds blow across man's face...And whisper of God's power and grace? Oh, give us faith to believe again...That peace on earth, goodwill to men...Will follow this winter of man's mind...And awaken his heart and make him kind...And just as great nature sends the spring...To give new birth to each sleeping thing...God, grant rebirth to man's slumbering soul...”.

This past weekend in most areas of the United States, the time changed to Daylight Savings Time, therefore the people turned their clocks up one hour. The month of March in some areas of the world is the time to plant, and other areas it is the time to harvest.

The clothing industry specializes in springtime clothing. Why do you surmise they do so? Possibly they take the opportunity of timing. They recognize that people are weary of the gray, cold, winter days, and their heavy winter clothing that provides warmth. In the spring, the clothing industry takes advantage of that knowledge by advertising new carefree clothing styles in bright new shades that leap off the page, and they beg to be purchased. It is called timing.

In the Book of Ecclesiastes (3:1-8), Solomon made an excellent point about timing. Solomon reminds God's people that God's timing in the world, and in a person's life, is important. No one loves you like Almighty God does. He provides different cycles, and has a plan for the world and for each individual. He gives people an opportunity to say my times are in Your hands. Jim Elliot stated: “God always gives His best to those who leave the choice with Him”. It is important for His people not to fear, or resent God's timing, but to be grateful for His perfect timing.

The fact that in the springtime a seed can be planted, and in its own time will produce a flower, or food will be produced, should speak to everyone about God's timing. Sevyn Streeter stated: “I've learned over the years to appreciate God's timing, and you can't rush things; it's gonna happen exactly when it's supposed to.”

Lord God, thank You that there is a time for everything. Help us to accept Your timing and to honor You. Amen.
