Jesus said: “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But with God everything is possible.”
Samuel Rutherford stated: “Trust God's Word and His power more than you trust your own feelings and experiences. Remember, your Rock is Christ, and it is the sea that ebbs and flows with the tides, not Him.”
When you think of the word trust you may describe it as hoping or putting your confidence in something. You may also describe trust as relying on your own “feelings” that every one of your decisions are constantly spot on. However, as Samuel Rutherford stated you are simply trusting “your own feelings and experiences”.
An example of a person who did not trust in his own power, but trusted in God's power, was Moses in the Book of Exodus. The Israelite's had been wandering around in the Egyptian wilderness for 40 years. Then the Lord gave to Moses the instructions to get moving and to lead them out.
The Israelites had hardly journeyed out of Egypt when they encountered a major challenge, and that was: How were they going to cross the Red Sea? With the Pharaoh's army approaching them, there appeared to be no way out of the situation. The people turned against Moses. Because of their lack of faith they became hostile and despairing because, their fate appeared to them to be in the hands of the Pharaoh's army.
Moses encouraged the people and told them: “Don't be afraid. Just stand where you are and watch the Lord rescue you. The Lord himself will fight for you. You won't have to lift a finger in your defense!” (Exodus 14:13a-14).
With a strong east wind blowing all night long the Red Sea seabed became dry. “So the people of Israel walked through the sea on dry ground, with walls of water on each side!” (Exodus 14:22). God performed a miracle at just the right time to demonstrate His mighty power to the Israelites.
In life we face all types of challenges and when we place our confidence in our own “feelings and experiences” we are often unable to see our way out. It takes faith to trust “God's Word and His power”. However, when we place ourselves in the hands of God, as Moses did, we will be saving ourselves from heartache.
Decide today that when you need guidance and direction, seek and trust “your Rock, Christ.” That same God who rolled back the Red Sea is waiting to show His mighty power to you too.
Almighty God, guide and direct our path according to Your will. Amen.
