When The World Turns Upside Down

“We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair.”

~ II Corinthians 4:8

When severe challenges attack a person from every side, and their faith becomes a struggle, how do they keep their faith stable? Where does a person go to handle such an overwhelming battle when their world turns completely upside down? John Maxwell stated: “Everyone gets discouraged. The question is: Are you going to give up or get up? It's a choice.”

Many biblical people suffered greatly as their world turned upside down, and they made the choice to not “give up.” Because of their faith in God some were persecuted, others were thrown in prison, others were stoned, while others were placed in exile, but their faith remained stable. How did they persevere and not become weary?

The Bible gives illustrations of people having patience while suffering. For example, Job patiently endured the many difficult circumstances he faced, and he remained faithful to God to the very end of his life (170 yrs old). Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were thrown into a fiery furnace because they refused to bow down to anyone but God, and God miraculously saved them. John told others about Jesus, and because of that he was sent into exile to the remote island of Patmos where he “...had a vision of the glorified Christ. God also revealed to him what would take place in the future—judgment and the ultimate triumph of God over evil (NLT Vital Statistics - Book of Revelation).”

When you are tempted to lose faith in your future during inevitable setbacks, the above examples can remind you to persevere. God watches over you as a shepherd watches over their flock. Billy Graham stated: “God is in control. He may not take away trials or make detours for us, but He strengthens us through them.” So, make a choice to “get up” when your world is turned upside down; keep trusting that God, in His timing, has the solution to the situation. The challenge for everyone is to continue to keep the faith in Him that your world will be stabilized once again. Erwin Lutzer stated: “Human problems are never greater than divine solutions.” Do not despair because there is nothing that God and you cannot handle together!

Almighty God, thank You that during the overwhelming battles, You are always with us to handle them. Amen.
