Straw, Sticks, And Bricks

Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.

~ Matthew 7:24-25

There is a children’s story about three little pigs, who each built a home of their own. Two of the pigs built their homes out of insecure material; straw and sticks. When the big bad wolf comes, he blows their houses down. The third pig however, builds his house with a little more effort, using strong material; brick. When the wolf comes and blows, the house is impervious, and the pig inside, is safe and sound.

Sometimes, the care we show for our earthly houses, far exceed the care given to our spiritual home. No matter how sturdy we build our house, just like Solomon’s temple, it can be ripped apart, in fact Jesus tells us this will happen. He asked them, “Are you looking at these buildings? The fact is, they will be destroyed. Every stone will be thrown down to the ground. Not one stone will be left on another.” Matthew 24:2

In Matthew 7:24-25, the house that Jesus is referring to is our spiritual life. When we build upon the rock of Jesus Christ, allowing Him to have full control, our foundation becomes Him—and God will never be destroyed. When the big bad wolf (Satan) comes, and tries to cause distraction, destruction, and demolition, he will not be successful. We may experience pain, suffering, and even physical death, but nothing will separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus.

Some may say that death would seem like a victory to Satan, but we are told very clearly that Jesus conquered death, by His sacrifice. The law of the Old Testament sheds light on our sin, and in it is the sting of death. “But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:57).” “For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands (2 Corinthians 5:1).”

We should throw away our straw, our sticks, and even our bricks. We need to place less worth on the earthly things we possess, because these things have no eternal value. When we build our hopes, dreams, desires, and the redemption of our soul, by joining forces with the triune God, we become an impenetrable fortress forever.

Dear God, Thank you for giving us Jesus who becomes our firm foundation. In His Name I pray, Amen
