The Coming Spirit

On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.”

~ John 7:37-39

John’s narrative creates a slowly building crescendo as Jesus becomes more audacious in his claims, and his opposition grows more aggressive. Just prior to Jesus uttering the words recited above, the chief priests and Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him.

But again, Jesus’s words had power. That power dissuaded the temple guards who returned to the chief priests and Pharisees to report, “No one ever spoke the way this man does.”

The priests and Pharisees had ceased hearing from God or experiencing his power. Their words accomplished nothing other than increasing the burden on their people. Jesus’ words contrasted sharply with that. He spoke of streams of living water flowing from within his followers. That resonated with God’s people who knew that they should have a greater hope than they’d been offered.

This description of the Holy Spirit is instructive – streams of living water flowing from within us, not just into us. The spirit works through us to bring light and life to this dark world.

Lord, let me know the power of your Holy Spirit. Amen.
